MANSA KANKAN MUSA - EMPEROR OF MALI

The most renowned of all the monarchs of the old Sudan. The Emperor claimed that the length of his realm was "about one year". Mali was one of the greatest states in the world of its time.

 

HAILE SELASSIE - EMPEROR OF ETHIOPIA

Renowned as the Emperor (1930-1974) who led one of the first independent and democratic countries in Africa. The first President of the Organization of African Unity.

 

ALBERT LUTHULI - PRESIDENT OF THE ANC

Renowned as the first person to be awarded a Nobel Prize in Africa (for peace) in 1960. He was born near Durban in South Africa.

 

DR CHRISTIAAN BARNARD - FIRST HEART TRANSPLANT

Renowned and respected as the most famous fighter for African freedom. First President of a truly democratic South Africa (1994) and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.
